MB Group is now B Corp certified

2020 has given us, as a company, many reasons to celebrate – but it’s this one that truly takes the cake. This is by far and away the proudest professional endeavor I have ever had the chance to be a part of.

Today we became B Corp certified, joining a movement of companies who are looking to use business as a force for change. We have always looked to press fast-forward in employee benefits, and this certification is a direct reflection of what ‘fast-forward’ looks like; the socially progressive nature of what we do and how we do it is something we hope will encourage others in our industry to follow suit and pursue a certification like this.

Our B Corp certification makes us the first all-female owned and operated group insurance brokerage in Canada to ever obtain this accreditation, and only the 4th brokerage in Canada; within the Health Insurance industry in North America, this makes MB Group the 9th to be certified.

I trust these numbers will rise as brokers start to understand the impact, as well as the unique and critical consulting role they play in the overall wellness of the companies.

The corporation may own the benefits policy, but there is a human on the other end of this who receives the benefit recommendations that you make. When we create a dialogue around cutting cost by cutting benefits, there is a significant ripple effect to the employee that we fail to take into consideration.

We were attracted to the B Corp movement because we see what we do through a larger lens: if you read between the lines in the claims, you’ll see a fragmented healthcare system, the link between the physical claims of today become the claims that become the mental illness claims of tomorrow (and vice versa), and the sheer discrepancy between the needs of the company for mental health resources, and the actual coverage amounts typically available.

Equality and sustainability are two hallmarks of the B Corp movement, we’re looking to build this into every benefits plan – the mental and physical health of your staff is the best bottom line sustainability you could ask for, and we plan to make this an easy process for the clients we represent. We put mental health front and center for a reason, and are proud to have procured the strongest, most comprehensive mental health offerings in the industry.

The B Corp certification has been an eight-month journey for our team at MB Pension & Benefits Group. It was a collective effort comprised of corporate policy experts, aspiring and soon-to-be psychology grad school students, and Excel sheet wizards who all brought their unique vantage points and skills to the table to help us formalize the process. We are most excited about having an element of accountability built into the labyrinth of what we do, and the minds we’re bringing together to hold us to this.

Lastly, our final score of 94.7 on the B Corp Assessment placed us as 2nd in our industry in the country! Until 2023, we will be coming for that number 1 spot.
